Mission San Jose
ission San Jose, founded in 1797 was the most successful Mission in Northern California--thousands of cattle, horses and sheep, acres of corn and wheat, and olives--vast orchards and tree lined avenues of olives. Secularization in 1834 ended the dominance of the Missions--all that had been planted and nurtured slowly went back to nature. Such was its fate until the California Gold Rush.
