Things to do in Lone Pine

Death Valley National Park
A superlative desert of streaming sand dunes, snow-capped mountains, multicolored rock layers, water-fluted canyons and three million acres of stone wilderness. Home to the Timbisha Shoshone and to plants and animals unique to the harshest of deserts. A place of legend and a place of trial.

Inyo Craters Mountain Bike Ride
The Inyo Craters ride begins at the junction of the Scenic Loop and Inyo Craters Road. Riders will go to the edge of one of the Inyo Craters. A guide will talk about the geology of the Inyo Craters, the most recent volcanic event in Mono County. These gaseous explosions happened about 600 years ago.

Inyo National Forest
Inyo National Forest covers 1.9 million acres, primarily on the eastern slopes of California's Sierra Nevada. It also juts into Nevada to embrace Boundary Peak, Nevada's highest point at 13,140 feet. Camping, hiking, backpacking, winter sports and fishing are the main attractions. More than 400 lakes and 150 miles of streams provide habitat for golden, brook, German brown and rainbow trout.

Manzanar National Historic Park
Manzanar War Relocation Center was one of ten camps at which Japanese American citizens and resident Japanese aliens were interned during World War II. Located at the foot of the imposing Sierra Nevada in eastern California's Owens Valley, Manzanar has been identified as the best preserved of these camps. Call 760-878-2194 for more information.

Mount Whitney
Mt. Whitney is the most frequently climbed peak in the Sierra Nevada, if not in the US. Because of this, the National Park Service and the US Forest Service, who manage the Whitney Portal Trailhead, have implemented a permit system to minimize the impact of day-hikers on the Mt. Whitney backcountry. All hikers entering the Mt. Whitney zone, including day-hikers, are required to obtain a permit.
