Things to do in Menlo Park
Alcatraz Island National Historic Landmark
Out in the middle of the San Francisco Bay, the island of Alcatraz is a world unto itself. Isolation, one of the constants of island life for any inhabitant - soldier, guard, prisoner, bird or plant - is a recurrent theme in the unfolding history of Alcatraz. Alcatraz Island is one of Golden Gate National Recreation Area's most popular destinations, offering a close-up look at a historic and infamous federal prison long off-limits to the public. Best Western Menlo Park lodging is nearby.
Angel Island State Park
Access to the Island is by private boat or public ferry from San Francisco, Tiburon or Vallejo. There is limited weekday ferry service to Angel Island during the winter. (check with ferry provider)
Candlestick Point State Recreation Area
This park offers beautiful views of the San Francisco Bay, with picnic areas, fishing (including two fishing piers) and hiking trails (including a fitness course for seniors and a bike trail.) The park has an area popular with windsurfers. There is another area with unique wind and metal musical instruments permanently placed within the park for visitors to enjoy. The name of the area came from the days of the early settlers. When wooden ships were burned off the point, the last part sinking into the water resembled a candlestick.
